What Are Outside Bets in Roulette?

There are two types of bets in roulette-inside and outside. As the name implies, inside bets are placed on the inside part of the roulette table layout while outside bets are placed on the outside.

The inside bets have a smaller chance of winning but a bigger payout while outside bets have a bigger chance of winning but a smaller payout.

The most common inside bet is the straight-up bet where you bet on a single number. The payout for this bet is 35 to 1. This means that if you bet $1 and the ball lands on your number, you will get $35 back.

The probability of this happening is 2.7% or 1 in 37.

The next most common inside bet is the split bet where you bet on two adjacent numbers such as 17 and 18 or 23 and 24. The probability of this happening is 5.

4% or 1 in 18.5 and the payout is 17 to 1.

The third most common inside bet is the street bet where you bet on three numbers in a row such as 7, 8, 9 or 22, 23, 24. The probability of this happening is 8.

1% or 1 in 12.3 and the payout is 11 to 1.

The fourth most common inside bet is the square bet or box of four numbers which has a probability of 10.8% or 1 in 9.

26 and a payout of 8 to 1. An example of this would be betting on the numbers 12, 13, 14, and 15 all at once.

The fifth and final inside bet is called the six line or double street bet and it covers two streets of three numbers each such as 31, 32, 33 and 34, 35, 36. The probability of this happening is 16.

Now let’s take a look at outside bets starting with even money bets which have a probability of 48.6% or 1 in 2.
