How Do You Count in Blackjack?

In blackjack, the player is trying to beat the dealer’s hand by having a hand with a higher point total without going over 21. The player does this by either taking more cards, or “hitting”, or by staying with the cards they have and “standing”.

The dealer must follow certain rules when dealing blackjack hands to the players, such as hitting on 16 or less and standing on 17 or more.

The player’s hand is counted first. If the player has an ace and a ten-value card (a “blackjack”), this automatically wins unless the dealer also has a blackjack, in which case it is a tie.

If the player does not have a blackjack, then they can choose to either hit or stand.

PRO TIP:When playing blackjack, it is important to remember that all face cards are worth ten, Aces are worth either one or eleven (player’s choice) and all other cards are worth their face value. Additionally, when calculating your hand’s total value, you should always add the highest possible total without going over 21.

If the player hits, they take another card from the deck and add its value to their hand. If they stand, they keep their current hand.

The player can hit as many times as they want until they either go over 21 (“bust”) or decide to stand.

Once all of the players have finished their hands, it is then the dealer’s turn. The dealer must follow certain rules when dealing their hand, such as hitting on 16 or less and standing on 17 or more.

If the dealer goes over 21 (“busts”), then all of the players who are still in the game win.

After all of the cards have been dealt, the winner is the player with the highest point total that is less than or equal to 21. If there is a tie between two or more players, then those players share the winnings equally.
