How Do You Cut Nut Slots?

Cutting slots for nuts is a process that can be done a few different ways. The most common way is to use a router, but a dado blade on a table saw can also be used.

If you’re using a router, you’ll need to use a guide to keep the bit from wandering as you cut.

To cut the slots with a router, set the depth of the bit so that it will cut about halfway through the thickness of the wood. For example, if you’re using a 1/4″ bit, set the depth of the router so that it will cut to a depth of 1/8″.

Once the depth is set, rout the slots in the same manner as you would rout any other groove.

If you’re using a dado blade on a table saw, set the blade to the same depth as you did with the router bit. Then, make a series of passes with the blade, each time moving it over about 1/16″.

As you make these passes, the cut will get wider and wider until it’s at the desired width. Finally, clean up any rough edges with a chisel or sandpaper.

Now that you know how to cut nut slots, you can add them to any project where they’re needed. Just be sure to use the proper size bit or blade for the job, and take care to rout or saw evenly so that your slots are uniform in width.
