How Does Payout Work in Blackjack?

In blackjack, payout works by the player being paid out at 3 to 2 odds on their bet when they are dealt a natural blackjack. A natural blackjack is when the player is dealt an ace and a ten-value card as their first two cards.

If the dealer also has a natural blackjack, then it is a push and the player’s bet is returned to them. If the dealer does not have a natural blackjack, then the player wins their bet and is paid out at 3 to 2 odds.

PRO TIP:Blackjack payouts are determined by the amount of money wagered and the type of hands dealt. A “blackjack” is a hand containing an Ace and any 10-point card, and pays out at 3:2 (or 1.5 times your bet). Other winning hands pay out at 1:1 (or even money). If you have a hand with a value that’s higher than the dealer’s hand, without going over 21, then you win the bet. It’s important to remember that if your hand goes over 21, it is considered a “bust” and you automatically lose the bet.

There are some variations of blackjack where the payout is different than 3 to 2. For example, in some casinos 6 to 5 odds are paid out on a natural blackjack.

This means that if you bet $100 and are dealt a natural blackjack, you would only be paid $120 instead of the $150 you would be paid at 3 to 2 odds. While this may not seem like much, it actually gives the casino a big advantage over the player in the long run.

So, if you are playing blackjack, be sure to find out what the payout odds are before you put down any money. And, if you are offered 6 to 5 odds on a natural blackjack, it is probably best to find another casino where you can get better payout odds.
