The Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana, which owns and operates the casino, announced the closure in a letter to employees on Wednesday.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Cypress Bayou Casino,” the letter said. “After much deliberation, the Tribal Council has made the difficult decision to close the casino effective 11:59 p.

m., tonight, May 6.”.

The closure comes as the result of “significant financial losses” due to the coronavirus pandemic, which forced the casino to close its doors on March 18. The casino had reopened on April 28, but was only able to operate at 25% capacity due to state-mandated restrictions.

“Despite our best efforts, we have been unable to generate enough revenue to offset our significant operating expenses,” the letter said. “As a result, we have no choice but to close the casino.”

The Chitimacha Tribe plans to reopen the casino “as soon as it is economically feasible,” but did not give a specific timeline. In the meantime, all employees will be laid off and will receive severance pay and health insurance benefits through May 31.
