In 1859, a group of Californian gamblers head to the small town of Poker Flat to enjoy a game of cards. However, their game is interrupted by a group of men who object to their gambling and want them to leave.
The group is forced to leave town and camp in the nearby woods.
During the night, one of the gamblers, John Oakhurst, wakes up and sees that one of the men in the group, Uncle Billy, has stolen all of their money. Oakhurst tries to stop him, but Uncle Billy runs away.
