Can You Surrender in Blackjack After Hitting?

You’ve been dealt a hand of blackjack and you’ve hit a total of 21. The dealer is showing a six. Can you surrender at this point?

The answer is no. Once you’ve hit, you can’t surrender.

The best you can do is stand pat and hope the dealer busts.

If you were holding a hard hand, like a 10-9, you might be able to surrender if the dealer were showing a nine. But since you have a soft hand, the only option is to hit or stand.

In blackjack, the player surrenders when he has a poor chance of winning the hand and decides to forfeit half of his original bet instead of playing on and risking losing the entire amount. For example, if the player has an 16 and the dealer is showing a 10, the player may elect to surrender rather than go head-to-head with the dealer knowing that it’s unlikely he’ll win the hand.

There are two types of surrender in blackjack – early and late. Early surrender allows the player to give up half of his bet before the dealer checks for blackjack, while late surrender only allows the player to do so after the dealer has checked for blackjack.

Late surrender is not offered at all casinos, so if it’s something you’re interested in, be sure to check the house rules before sitting down at a table.
