Do PCs Still Have PCI Slots?

Most PCs today are built without PCI slots—though you can still find them on some high-end gaming rigs and workstations. The last mass-market PCs with PCI slots were probably made around 2010.

So, if you have an old computer kicking around, it’s probably not worth trying to upgrade it with a new graphics card or other PCI device.

But what exactly are PCI slots And why did they disappear from most PCs Here’s a quick explainer.

The Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) bus was introduced in 1992 as a way to connect devices to a computer’s motherboard. It replaced an older bus standard called ISA, which was much slower.

Over the years, the PCI bus has been through several iterations—PCI, PCI-X, and now PCIe.

PEI is the latest and greatest version of the PCI bus. It’s much faster than its predecessors and uses less power.

That’s why most PCs today have PCIe slots for connecting graphics cards and other devices—and not PCI slots.

If you have an old PC with a PCI slot, you can still use it for some devices. For example, many sound cards and network adapters still use the PCI bus.

But if you want to upgrade your graphics card, you’re out of luck—you’ll need to buy a new PC with a PCIe slot.
