Livermore has a Mediterranean climate characterized by cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers. January is the coolest month with an average maximum temperature of 58.9 °F (14.9 °C).

July is the warmest month with an average maximum temperature of 94.6 °F (34.8 °C). The highest recorded temperature was 115 °F (46 °C) on June 15, 1961; the Lowest recorded temperature was 17 °F (−8 °C) on December 11, 1932.

The city averages 16 inches (410 mm) of precipitation annually, most of which falls between November and March. Summer months are generally rain-free except for occasional thunderstorms during late summer afternoons and evenings; these storms occasionally produce hail and strong outflow winds that can down trees and power lines.

Winter storms are usually weak systems that move in from the Gulf of Alaska and drop very little rain or snow as they move through Northern California; however, more significant systems do occur about once per year on average. One such system produced several inches of wet snow in Livermore on December 11, 1932 that accumulated to a depth of 8 inches (20 cm) on some level surfaces before melting later in the day as temperatures rose above freezing.

In recent years,[when?] Livermore has experienced a population boom due largely to its proximity to Silicon Valley and its position along Interstate 580/Interstate 680 which provide quick access to both employment centers. The growth has led to increased pressure on local infrastructure including housing, roads, water supply, and sewer systems.

The City has undertaken a number of planning efforts to manage this growth while preserving Livermore’s unique small-town character including updating its General Plan and Zoning Code.

While there has been some discussion among city leaders about potentially adding slots or other forms of gambling within Livermore in order to generate additional revenue, there has been no serious movement on this issue and it remains unlikely that any changes will be made in the near future.
