How Did Ada Blackjack Get Stranded?

In 1921, Ada Blackjack was living in Nome, Alaska with her husband and two young sons. Her husband, who was a whaler, had been out of work for some time and the family was struggling to make ends meet. In order to try and earn some money, Ada decided to join a group of men who were planning to sail to Wrangel Island, located off the coast of Siberia, in order to hunt for foxes.

The group consisted of four men: Lorne Knight, Allan Crawford, Fred Maurer, and Vladimir Sokolov. Knight and Crawford were experienced hunters and explorers, while Maurer and Sokolov were inexperienced.

The group set sail from Nome in September 1921 and arrived at Wrangel Island in early November. They quickly realized that the island was uninhabited and that there was no game to be found.

With winter fast approaching, the men knew that they needed to build shelter and stockpile food if they were going to survive the long months ahead. Knight and Crawford set out to hunt for polar bears, while Maurer and Sokolov stayed behind to build a cabin.

Unfortunately, Knight and Crawford were unsuccessful in their hunt and they returned empty-handed. The situation on the island quickly deteriorated as food supplies ran low and temperatures dropped. By January 1922, all four men were suffering from scurvy due to lack of vitamin C.

In desperation, Sokolov decided to try and walk back to civilization – he left the cabin on January 30th with only a few days’ worth of food. He was never seen again and is presumed to have died somewhere along the way.

With only three men remaining on the island, things looked bleak. However, in early April a ship finally arrived – it was the British vessel “Belle” which had been sent to rescue the stranded men.

All three men were successfully evacuated from Wrangel Island and they eventually made their way back to Nome.

Ada Blackjack’s story is an incredible tale of survival against all odds. Stranded on a remote island with little food or shelter, she managed to survive for over nine months before being rescued.

Her story is a testament to the human spirit and its ability to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
