How Do Aces Work in Blackjack?

Aces are the cards with the highest value in blackjack. There are four aces in a deck of cards, and they are all worth 11 points.

When you are dealt an ace, you have the option to count it as either 1 point or 11 points. This is called “soft” counting because the ace can be worth either 1 or 11 depending on what is best for your hand.

PRO TIP:In Blackjack, an Ace is worth either 1 or 11, depending on the player’s hand. When you have an Ace in your hand, it is best to count it as 11 if the other cards in your hand add up to 10 or less. If the other cards add up to more than 10, it is best to count your Ace as 1.

If you are dealt an ace and a 9, for example, you have a soft 20. This is a good hand because if you hit and are dealt a 10, you will still have a 21 and not bust.

If you were to hit and be dealt a 2, 3, or 4, however, you would want to count the ace as 1 point because otherwise you would bust.

The ace is such a powerful card because it gives you more options when counting your hand. It is important to remember that you should always count an ace as 11 points if it means that you will not bust, but if counting it as 11 would put you over 21 then you should count it as 1 point instead.
