How Do SD Card Slots Work?

Secure Digital (SD) card slots are used in many portable devices, such as digital cameras, camcorders and handheld computers. They are also used in some car stereos and on some cellular phones and portable media players.

SD cards are about the size of a postage stamp and have a capacity of up to 2 GB. The data is stored on the card using flash memory.

Most SD cards have a locking switch on the side of the card. This switch prevents accidental erasure or formatting of the data on the card. The SD card slot is located on the side of the device. To insert an SD card, you must first unlock the switch.

Then, insert the SD card into the slot with the label facing up. You will feel a slight click when the card is properly seated in the slot. To remove an SD card, press in on the card to release it from the slot, then pull it out.
