How Do You Go Bust in Blackjack?

In blackjack, “bust” means that your hand has gone over 21. If you bust, you automatically lose the hand, no matter what the dealer has.

There are a few ways that you can bust in blackjack. The most common way is to simply draw too many cards.

If you start with a hand of 12 and then draw a 9, you’ve gone over 21 and have busted.

PRO TIP:In Blackjack, it is possible to “go bust” if the total of your cards is greater than 21. To avoid going bust, try to keep track of the cards that have been played in the round so that you can make an educated guess as to which cards may be left in play. Additionally, it can be helpful to practice basic strategy charts so that you have a better understanding of when it is best to hit, stand, double down, etc.

You can also bust by having a hand that contains an ace counted as 11 points. This is called “soft” busting.

For example, if you have an ace and a 6, that’s a soft 17. If you then hit and draw a 10, you’ve gone over 21 and have busted.

There are a few other ways to go bust in blackjack, but those are the most common. So, how can you avoid going bust? The best way is to simply be aware of your hand total and be careful not to hit when you’re close to 21.

That way, you’ll give yourself the best chance to win the hand.
