How Do You Play Blackjack Against the House?

The game of blackjack is one of the most popular casino games in the world. The object of the game is to beat the dealer’s hand by having a hand that totals closer to 21 than the dealer’s hand, without going over 21 (busting).

Blackjack is usually played with six decks of cards, but can also be played with one, two, four, or eight decks. The number of decks used does not affect the basic strategy for blackjack.

The player and dealer are each dealt two cards at the start of a hand. The player’s cards are dealt face up, while the dealer has one face up and one face down (the hole card).

The value of a hand is simply the sum of the values of the cards in it. The Ace counts as 1 or 11, face cards (kings, queens and jacks) count as 10, and all other cards count as their numeric value.

If either the player or dealer has an Ace and a 10-value card (a “natural”), that hand automatically wins (unless it’s a tie). If both have naturals, it’s a push – neither player nor dealer wins or loses.

After the initial deal, the player can choose to hit (take another card) or stand (keep their current total). Once the player stands, it’s then the dealer’s turn to hit or stand. If the dealer busts (goes over 21), all remaining players win; if not, they compare their totals to the dealer’s total.

Whoever is closest to 21 without going over wins. If there’s a tie, it’s a push – nobody wins or loses that hand.

It’s important to note that blackjack is a game of skill as well as luck. While luck plays a role in whether you win or lose any particular hand, over time, skilled players will generally win more than unskilled players. That’s because skilled players know when to hit and when to stand, based on both their own cards and those showing on the table.

They also know when to double down (double their bet and take just one more card) and when to split pairs (double their bet and split their cards into two separate hands). These decisions are based on mathematical calculations designed to give players the best chance of winning each hand.
