You add up the value of your cards and the dealer does the same with his cards. If either of you has an ace and a ten-value card (a jack, queen or king), then you have blackjack and automatically win unless the other player also has blackjack, in which case it’s a tie. If nobody has blackjack, then whoever has the highest total wins.

The value of the cards is simple. Two through ten are worth their face value. Aces are worth 1 or 11, whichever is better for your hand.

Jacks, queens and kings are all worth 10. If your total is more than 21, then you “bust” and automatically lose.

Once the player totals his hand he can either “hit” or “stand” depending on what he thinks his chances are of winning the hand. Hitting means taking another card from the deck in an attempt to improve your hand without going over 21.

Standing means keeping your current hand without taking any more cards from the deck.

If after being dealt your first two cards you have a total of nine, 10 or 11, you may “double down” which means that you double your bet and take only one more card from the deck before standing. This is usually done when the player feels he has a good chance of winning the hand with just one more card.

If after being dealt your first two cards you have two cards of matching rank (for example, two sevens), then you may “split” them into two separate hands by doubling your bet and receiving one additional card for each new hand created by the split. For example if you split a pair of sevens and then receive an eight on one of them and a nine on the other, then you have 18 which is a very good hand indeed!
