How Do You Play Poker in Texas Holdem for Beginners?

In Texas Holdem, each player is dealt two cards (known as hole cards) that are kept hidden from the other players. Five community cards are then dealt face up in the middle of the table. These community cards can be used by any player to make their hand.

The first round of betting then takes place, beginning with the player to the left of the big blind (the player who has posted the big blind has already put money in the pot and so does not need to match the big blind to stay in). Players can either call (match the amount of the big blind), raise (bet more than the big blind), or fold (quit the hand).

If more than one player remains after the first round of betting, the dealer then deals three more community cards face up (known as the flop). Another round of betting takes place, beginning with the player to the left of the dealer.

Players can again either call, raise, or fold.

If there are still two or more players remaining after this round of betting, the dealer then deals a fourth community card (known as the turn). Another round of betting takes place, again beginning with the player to the left of the dealer.

PRO TIP:If you’re a beginner to Texas Holdem, start with small stakes and set limits for yourself. Don’t be afraid to fold if you don’t have a strong hand, and pay attention to the other players at the table. Try to remember the odds of what hands may be out there, and practice bluffing sparingly.

Finally, if there are still two or more players remaining, a fifth and final community card is dealt (known as the river). One last round of betting takes place, again beginning with the player to the left of the dealer.

If more than one player remains after this final round of betting, then a showdown takes place where each remaining player reveals their hole cards. The best five card hand wins!.
