How Do You Play Virginia Lottery Blackjack?

In Virginia, lottery blackjack is played with a regular deck of 52 cards, plus one joker. The joker is used as the ace of spades, and can be worth either 1 or 11 points, depending on what the player needs.

The aim of the game is to get as close to 21 points as possible without going over, and to beat the dealer’s hand.

To start each player is dealt two cards face up. The dealer then deals themselves two cards, one face up and one face down.

Players then have the option to ‘stand’ with the cards they have been dealt, or ‘hit’ and take another card from the deck. If at any point a player goes over 21 points they ‘bust’, and automatically lose the hand.

Once all players have either stood or busted, the dealer reveals their face down card. If they have less than 16 points they must ‘hit’, but if they have 17 points or more they must ‘stand’. If the dealer busts then all remaining players win their bet.

Otherwise, those players still in the hand compare their totals to the dealer’s hand, and whoever has the higher total wins their bet. If it is a tie then it is a ‘push’, and no-one wins or loses their bet.
