How Does 5e Determine Spell Slots?

In Dungeons and Dragons 5e, spell slots are determined by the class and level of the character. For example, a first level wizard has two 1st-level spell slots.

A sorcerer has one 1st-level spell slot.

Spell slots are used to cast spells. The number of spell slots a character has is determined by the character’s class and level. A first-level wizard has two 1st-level spell slots. A bard has three 1st-level spell slots.

A character can use a higher-level spell slot to cast a lower-level spell, but the reverse is not true. So, a sorcerer could use his 1st-level spell slot to cast sleep, but he could not use his 2nd-level spell slot to cast sleep unless he was at least 2nd level.

The number of spells a character knows is also determined by the character’s class and level. A wizard knows two 1st-level spells at 1st level.

She learns two more 1st-level spells at 2nd level. At 3rd level, she learns two 2nd-level spells.

A sorcerer knows four 1st-level spells at 1st level. He learns two more 1st-level spells at 2nd level.

At 3rd level, he learns two 2nd-level spells.

A bard knows three 1st-level spells at 1st level.

A character can also learn spells from scrolls or books. These spells are in addition to the ones the character already knows from her class and level.

In order to cast a spell from a scroll or book, the character must have the scroll or book with her when she casts the spell. The scroll or book is then consumed in the casting of the spell.
