How Is a Blackjack Used?

A blackjack, also known as a natural, is a hand that totals 21 points in blackjack. It consists of an Ace and any ten-point card. A blackjack hand beats any other hand, except for another blackjack. If both players have a blackjack, it’s a push, or a tie.

Blackjacks usually pay 3-to-2 odds, or 1.5 times your bet. If you bet $5 and get a blackjack, you win $7.50.

PRO TIP:Blackjack, or “21”, is a card game that uses a standard deck of 52 cards. The objective is to get as close as possible to 21 without going over. Each card has a different value—Ace is worth 1 or 11, Kings, Queens and Jacks are worth 10 and all other cards are worth their face value. The player’s score is determined by adding up the values of the cards in their hand. In order to win, the player must have a higher score than the dealer but not exceed 21.

There are some casinos that offer blackjack games that pay 6-to-5 odds instead of 3-to-2. That means if you bet $5 and get a blackjack, you only win $6 instead of $7.

Avoid these games if you can because the house edge is increased by 1.39% when blackjacks only pay 6-to-5 instead of 3-to-2.
