No matter what game you’re playing, though, the basic idea is the same: you’re trying to make the best hand possible with the cards you’re dealt.

So, how many cards do you start with in poker? It depends on the game you’re playing. In Texas Hold’em, each player is dealt two cards (known as hole cards) that only they can see.

Then, five community cards are dealt face up in the middle of the table for everyone to see. Each player can use any combination of their two hole cards and the five community cards to make the best hand possible.
