How Many MD-PhD Slots Are There?

There are approximately 1,000 accredited MD-PhD programs in the United States. Each program has an average of 10 slots per year, for a total of 10,000 slots nationwide.

However, the number of applications far exceeds the number of available slots. In fact, only about 6% of applicants will ultimately be accepted into an MD-PhD program.

The vast majority of MD-PhD programs are affiliated with a medical school. To be eligible for admission, applicants must first complete a bachelor’s degree and take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).

They must then apply to and be accepted into a medical school. Once they have completed their first year of medical school, they can apply to an MD-PhD program.

The selection process for MD-PhD programs is extremely competitive. In addition to considering an applicant’s academic record and MCAT score, programs also look at their research experience, letters of recommendation, and personal statements.

The most competitive applicants will have research experience that is directly relevant to the program’s focus.

MD-PhD programs typically take 8 years to complete. The first 4 years are spent completing medical school, after which students begin their doctoral research.

Once they have completed their doctoral dissertation, they return to clinical training for their final 4 years.
