How Many Parachain Slots Are There?

Polkadot’s relay chain will initially support 100 parachains, with the goal of eventually supporting thousands. The number of parachains that can be supported by the relay chain is limited by two factors: the amount of available bandwidth on the relay chain, and the amount of available processing power.

The amount of bandwidth available on the relay chain is determined by the block size, which is currently set at 4MB. The amount of processing power available is determined by the number of validators on the relay chain.

In the initial phase of Polkadot’s development, there will be 100 validators on the relay chain, each with a stake of at least 1 DOT.

The number of parachains that can be supported by the relay chain will increase over time as both the block size and the number of validators increase. The goal is to eventually support thousands of parachains, which would allow for a much more decentralized and scalable ecosystem than is possible with traditional blockchain architectures.
