How Many Spell Slots Do You Get When Multiclass?

Multiclassing is a great option for players who want to try something new or build a character with a unique skillset. But how does it work when it comes to spellcasting? How many spell slots do you get when multiclass?

Here’s how it works:

Exclusive Slots & Free Spins Offers:

The number of spell slots you have is determined by your class and level. For example, a 1st-level sorcerer has 2 1st-level spell slots.

When you multiclass, you gain additional spell slots of the same level as the ones you already have, based on your new class. So, if you’re a 1st-level sorcerer and you multiclass into wizard, you’ll gain 2 1st-level wizard spell slots.

The number of spells you know doesn’t change when you multiclass. You still only know the number of spells indicated by your class’s spellcasting feature. For example, if you’re a 1st-level sorcerer, you know two cantrips and four 1st-level spells.

If you multiclass into wizard, you still only know two cantrips and four 1st-level spells. You would only know more spells if you gained levels in sorcerer or wizard (or another class that gives you access to spells).

You can use any combination of your available spell slots to cast your spells. For example, if you’re a 5th-level sorcerer/5th-level wizard, you could use one of your 5th-level sorcerer spell slots to cast lightning bolt or one of your 5th-level wizard spell slots to cast fireball.

Or you could use both of your 5th-level sorcerer spell slots to cast two 3rd-level spells (such as fireball and lightning bolt).

So, in short, when multiclassing into a new spellcasting class, you gain additional spell slots of the same level as the ones you already have. The number of spells you know doesn’t change.
