Eleanor Dumont, better known as “Madame Moustache”, was a successful gambler and businesswoman in the American West during the late 1800s. She was born in France and immigrated to New York City as a teenager.

She eventually made her way to San Francisco, where she began working as a dealer in a gambling house.

Dumont quickly gained a reputation as an expert gambler and card shark. She was especially skilled at the game of blackjack. In 1852, she opened her own gambling house in Virginia City, Nevada.

Dumont’s casino was very popular with miners and other workers in the area. She became known for her generosity, often giving free drinks and meals to her customers.

In 1856, Dumont moved her casino to Aurora, California. She continued to operate her business successfully until 1860, when she was forced to close it down due to the outbreak of the Civil War.

After the war, Dumont relocated to San Francisco, where she opened another gambling house. This business venture was also successful, and Dumont became one of the richest women in California.

However, she eventually lost all of her money through gambling and bad investments.

Dumont died penniless in San Francisco in 1879. Despite her tragic end, she is still remembered as one of the most successful and colorful characters of the Old West.
