Playing the hand out is generally only advantageous when the dealer is showing a 5 or 6 and you have a hand that totals between 12 and 16. These are called stiff hands because they’re unlikely to improve without hitting (taking another card).

Against a 5 or 6, you have a good chance of winning as long as you don’t hit and go over 21.

Finally, betting that the dealer will bust can be profitable in some situations, but it’s generally not advised. The most common time to do this is when the dealer is showing a 2 through 6 and you have a hand totaling between 12 and 16.

However, even in this situation, there’s no guarantee that the dealer will actually bust so it’s still considered a bit of a gamble.
