Is an Ace 11 in Blackjack?

An Ace can be worth either 11 or 1 in blackjack, depending on what is best for the player’s hand. If the player is holding a hand with a value of 21 or less, then an Ace is worth 11.

If the player’s hand exceeds 21, then the Ace reverts to a value of 1.

PRO TIP:In Blackjack, an Ace can count as either a 1 or 11, depending on your hand. It’s beneficial to count an Ace as 11 when you have a low total, but if your total is close to 21, it’s best to count the Ace as 1.

There are some exceptions to this rule. If the player is holding a hand with a value of 18 or 19, and the dealer is showing a 9, 10, or Ace, then it is generally advisable to stand on the 18 or 19, and take the dealer’s bust card as a win.

In this case, the Ace would be worth 1.

Some casinos also offer what is called “Late Surrender”, which allows the player to give up half of their bet even after the dealer has checked for blackjack. In this case, if the player has a hand with an Ace worth 11, they may elect to surrender and only lose half of their bet instead of their entire bet.
