Is Binions Casino Open?

Binion’s Gambling Hall, formerly Binion’s Horseshoe, is a casino on Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada, owned by TLC Casino Enterprises. The casino is named after its founder, Benny Binion, who ran the Horseshoe Casino from 1951 until his death in 1989.

The Horseshoe was originally opened by Jay Sarno on April 30, 1951. Sarno wanted to create a luxurious gambling hall that would be a landmark for years to come. He modeled it after the Horseshoe Club in Old Havana, Cuba.

The Horseshoe became famous for its liberal rules regarding gambling and especially for its “crap shoot”. These rules were put in place to keep the game fair and to keep players from cheating.

In 1955, Benny Binion took over the Horseshoe Casino. He renamed it Binion’s Horseshoe and changed the craps rules to be more favorable to the players. This made the Horseshoe very popular with gamblers.

Binion also instituted a policy of paid vacations and other benefits for his employees. This made him very popular with them as well.

Binion’s son Jack took over the casino when Benny died in 1989. Under Jack’s leadership, the Horseshoe expanded its hotel facilities and added several new restaurants.

In 1995, Jack sold the Horseshoe to Harrah’s Entertainment (now Caesars Entertainment) for $140 million. The sale included all of Binion’s gambling properties, including the Mint Hotel & Casino and the Apache Hotel & Casino.

Caesars Entertainment has continued to run the Horseshoe as a successful casino property. In 2009, they completed a $17 million renovation of the casino floor and hotel rooms.

The Horseshoe remains one of the most popular casinos on Fremont Street and is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
