Is Chukchansi Casino Still Open?

Chukchansi Casino, in Coarsegold, California, is still open and operating despite a recent legal battle. The casino is owned by the Picayune Rancheria of Chukchansi Indians, and has been in operation since 2002.

However, the tribe has been embroiled in a legal dispute with the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) over its gaming compact. The NIGC revoked the tribe’s gaming compact in 2015, and the tribe has been fighting to keep the casino open ever since.

In 2016, a federal judge ruled that the casino must close, but the tribe appealed the ruling. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned the lower court’s ruling, and the casino remained open.

However, the NIGC appealed that decision to the Supreme Court. In December 2017, the Supreme Court declined to hear the case, effectively upholding the Ninth Circuit’s decision.

The legal battle has taken a toll on the tribe. The casino has had to lay off staff and cut back on hours of operation.

However, it remains open and is still operating.
