The Morongo tribe has a long history in California. The tribe has inhabited the area for over 10,000 years. The first European contact with the tribe was in 1769, when the Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza met with the tribe’s leader at the time, Chief Cabezon. The tribe was initially friendly with the Spanish, but relations deteriorated when the Spanish began forcing the tribe to convert to Christianity and work on the missions.

In 1824, the tribe rebelled against the Spanish and killed several soldiers. This led to a series of battles between the tribe and the Spanish military.

In 1834, Chief Cabezon died and was succeeded by Chief Santos Manuel. Under his leadership, the tribe began to attack settlers in an effort to drive them out of California.

In 1838, Chief Santos Manuel was killed by Mexican soldiers during a battle near San Gorgonio Pass. His son, Chief Juan Maria Osuna, took over as leader of the tribe.

Under Chief Juan Maria Osuna’s leadership, the tribe continued its fight against the settlers. In 1841, he led an attack on a wagon train that resulted in the death of several settlers.

This led to a bounty being placed on his head by the government. In 1852, he was killed by a group of vigilantes while he was sleeping in his tepee.

After Chief Juan Maria Osuna’s death, leadership of the tribe passed to his son Pedro Osuna. Under Pedro Osuna’s leadership, the tribe signed a treaty with the United States government in 1852 that granted them reservation land in Southern California.

The treaty also allowed them to keep their horses and guns.

The Morongo casino is located on reservation land that was granted to the tribe by this treaty. The casino generates revenue for the tribal government that is used for healthcare, education, housing, and other services for tribal members.

It also provides jobs for tribal members and non-tribal members alike.
