Penn National then announced its plans to sell the property in 2020.

PRO TIP:The Rio Hotel and Casino is not closing permanently. The property is undergoing renovations and is temporarily closed until further notice.

The Rio has been home to some of Las Vegas’ most popular nightclubs and shows, including Penn & Teller and Chippendales. The property also includes a convention center and a casino with more than 1,500 slot machines and 60 table games.

The Rio’s closing comes as Las Vegas continues to struggle to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of the city’s hotels and casinos have been closed since March 2020, and tourism has plummeted.

It is unclear what will happen to the Rio’s employees when the property closes. Penn National has said that it is “committed to working with the new owner on transition plans for our team members.”
