In the late 1970s, a group of investors led by Resorts International chairman James Crosby bought the old Stanley Warner estate on the Boardwalk and announced plans to build the $250 million Taj Mahal Casino. The project was financed with junk bonds and was completed in 1990.

The Taj Mahal opened amid great fanfare, with Crosby declaring it “the eighth wonder of the world.” But it quickly ran into financial trouble, and in 1991, Crosby was forced to resign as chairman of Resorts International.

The company declared bankruptcy in 1992, and the Taj Mahal was put up for sale.

In 1996, Donald Trump bought the property for $8 million. He invested an additional $100 million to renovate and re-open it as the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort.

The Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort closed its doors on October 10, 2016. The property is now owned by Hard Rock International, which plans to reopen it as a Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in 2018.
