Casino is a 1995 American epic crime film directed by Martin Scorsese, starring Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone, and Joe Pesci. The film is based on the nonfiction book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas by Nicholas Pileggi, who also co-wrote the screenplay for the film with Scorsese.
The film chronicles the rise and fall of mobster Sam “Ace” Rothstein (De Niro) and his friend and partner Nicky Santoro (Pesci). The story is set in 1969–1981 in Las Vegas and details Ace’s operation of the gambling empire the Tangiers Hotel & Casino, while also depicting the world of organized crime in general.

Rothstein is based on real-life Mob enforcer Anthony Spilotro, while Santoro is based on real-life Mobster Frank Rosenthal. Casino was released on November 22, 1995, to mostly positive critical reception, and was a box-office success.
Casino was nominated for numerous awards from various groUPS and organizations, including ten Academy Award nominations. However, it only won one award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
The film begins with a voice-over narration by Sam “Ace” Rothstein (Robert De Niro) as he recalls his experiences working as a casino manager. In 1971, Rothstein is approached by Midwest Mafia boss Remo Gaggi (Frank Vincent) about running the Tangiers Casino in Las Vegas.
Gaggi sends his associate Lester Diamond (James Woods) to persuade Ace to take the job. Lester explains that they need a gaming expert to run their new casino venture in Las Vegas.
Ace eventually agrees to take on the job and asks his friend Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci) to come along and help him out. Nicky is initially reluctant but agrees to Ace’s request after being convinced by Ace’s wife Ginger McKenna (Sharon Stone).
The two friends start working at the Tangiers Casino and quickly make a name for themselves.
However, their success does not come without problems. One of these problems arises when Ginger begins an affair with Lester Diamond.
This causes Ace to become very jealous and paranoid which leads to him making several bad decisions that put both himself and his casino in danger. Another problem occurs when Nicky starts becoming too violent which gets him banned from every casino in Las Vegas.
Despite these problems, Ace and Nicky continue to run their casino successfully until they eventually get caught up in a web of corruption and deceit that leads to their downfall. The story then jumps forward to 1981 where we see an elderly Ace meeting with FBI agents about his past experiences with the mob.
He tells them everything he knows about how the mob ran their casinos in Las Vegas.
