WHAT ARE SO DIMM Slots?

SO-DIMM slots are a type of memory slot used in laptops and other small computers. They are smaller than regular DIMM slots and have a different pin configuration.

SO-DIMM slots are used to hold small outline dual in-line memory modules (SO-DIMMs). These modules are smaller and thinner than regular DIMMs, and have a 64-bit data path.

SO-DIMMs are available in a variety of sizes, including 512 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB, and 4 GB. The most common type of SO-DIMM used in laptops is the DDR3 SO-DIMM, which has a maximum transfer rate of 1600 MT/s.

SO-DIMM slots are located on the motherboard of a laptop or other small computer. They are typically arranged in pairs, with each slot supporting a different type of memory module.

For example, one slot might support DDR3 SO-DIMMs while the other slot supports DDR4 SO-DIMMs.

The number of SO-DIMM slots on a motherboard varies depending on the motherboard’s design. Some motherboards have two SO-DIMM slots, while others have four or more.

SO-DIMMs are not interchangeable with regular DIMMs. They can only be inserted into matching SO-DIMM slots.

Attempting to insert a SO-DIMM into a regular DIMM slot will damage the module and/or the slot.

SO-DIMMs offer several advantages over regular DIMMs, including:

• Smaller size – Allows for smaller laptop designs
• Lower power consumption – Reduces battery drain
• Greater scalability – easy to upgrade memory by adding more modules.
