There are many different hand rankings in poker, but the most common is the standard ranking. This ranking goes from highest to Lowest: royal flush, straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair, one pair, and high card. A royal flush is the best possible hand in poker, and it consists of an Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and Ten of the same suit. A straight flush is the second best hand, and it consists of five cards in sequence that are all of the same suit. Four of a kind is the third best hand, and it consists of four cards of the same rank. A full house is the fourth best hand, and it consists of three cards of one rank and two cards of another rank.
A flush is the fifth best hand, and it consists of five cards of the same suit. A straight is the sixth best hand, and it consists of five cards in sequence that are not all of the same suit. Three of a kind is the seventh best hand, and it consists of three cards of the same rank. Two pair is the eighth best hand, and it consists of two pairs of cards. One pair is the ninth best hand, and it consists of one pair of cards. High card is the tenth best hand, and it consists of no pairs or sequences; instead, it simply contains the highest card out of all five that you are holding.
In general poker games such as Texas Hold’em or Omaha Hold’em, each player will be dealt two hole cards (also called pocket cards) that only they can see. There will then be a round of betting where players can either call (match the amount already bet), raise (bet more than has already been bet), or fold (give up their hand). After this round of betting has concluded, three more community cards will be dealt face up in the middle of the table (these are called flop cards). Another round of betting will ensue, and then a fourth community card will be dealt (the turn).
Another round betting will happen after this card has been dealt before finally a fifth community card (the river) completes the flop. Again there will be another round betting before finally all remaining players show their hands to determine who has won.
