What Are the Names of Poker Hands?

Poker is a card game that is played with a standard deck of 52 cards. There are a variety of ways to play poker, but the most common is Texas Hold ‘Em.

In this type of poker, each player is dealt two cards (the “hole cards”), and then five community cards are dealt face up in the middle of the table. The best five-card hand wins the pot.

The first thing you need to know about poker hands is the rank of the hands from highest to Lowest. The highest-ranking hand is a royal flush, which is a straight flush (a hand with five cards in sequential order) that includes the ace, king, queen, jack, and ten of the same suit.

The next highest-ranking hand is a straight flush, followed by four of a kind, a full house, a flush, a straight, three of a kind, two pair, and one pair. The Lowest-ranking hand is no pair (also called high card).

PRO TIP:The names of the different poker hands are: Royal Flush, Straight Flush, Four of a Kind, Full House, Flush, Straight, Three of a Kind, Two Pair and One Pair. Knowing the names of these different hands will help you understand which hand is stronger than another and increase your chances of winning.

Once you know the ranks of the hands, you can start learning the names of specific hands. For example, if you have an ace of spades and a king of spades in your hole cards, and then the flop (the first three community cards) comes up ace-king-queen all in spades, you have just made a royal flush: the highest possible hand in poker.

If you have four cards of the same rank in your hand (for example, four sevens), that’s called four of a kind. If you have three cards of one rank and two cards of another rank (for example, three queens and two tens), that’s called a full house. If you have five cards all of the same suit (for example, all hearts), that’s called a flush. If you have five cards in sequential order but not all of the same suit (for example, Ace-2-3-4-5), that’s called a straight.

Three cards of one rank and two unrelated side cards is called three of a kind (for example: 3 Jacks and a 5 and an 8). Two pairs are just what they sound like: two sets of two matching cards (for example: 2 Aces and 2 Eights). One pair means you have two matching cards with different ranks from everything else in your hand (for example: 2 Kings). And finally no pair means you don’t have any matching card ranks at all in your hand (meaning your highest card is your only chance to win).

Now that you know the ranks and names of poker hands, you’re well on your way to becoming a poker pro!.
