What Are the Terms in Blackjack?

Blackjack, also known as twenty-one, is a card game played between one or more players and a dealer. The object of the game is to beat the dealer’s hand by having a higher total than the dealer without going over 21.

Blackjack is one of the most popular casino games in the world.

The basic rules of blackjack are simple. The player and the dealer are each dealt two cards, with the player’s cards being dealt face up and the dealer’s cards being dealt face down. The player can then choose to either hit (take another card) or stand (keep their current total). If the player’s total exceeds 21, they bust and lose their bet.

If the dealer’s total exceeds 21, they also bust and the player wins their bet. If neither the player nor the dealer busts, the hand with the higher total wins.

There are a few important terms that are used in blackjack that players should be familiar with.

Hit: Taking another card from the dealer.

Stand: Keeping your current total and not taking any more cards.

Bust: Going over 21.

Double down: Doubling your bet and taking one more card. This can only be done on the first two cards dealt to the player.

Split: Splitting your hand into two hands when you are dealt two cards of equal value. You then place a second bet equal to your first bet and play each hand separately.

Blackjack: Getting an ace and a ten-value card on your first two cards dealt to you. This pays out at 3:2 odds (meaning you win $3 for every $2 you bet).

If both the player and dealer have blackjack, it is a push (a tie) and no one wins or loses.

Surrender: Giving up your hand and losing half your bet instead of playing on. This option is only available on the first two cards dealt to the player and if the dealer does not have blackjack.
