What Are the Types of Roulette?

There are two types of roulette- American and European. American roulette has 38 numbers on the wheel, 0-36, and a 00. The European roulette has 37 numbers on the wheel, 0-36. The house edge is lower on the European wheel because there is only one zero.

The extra slot on the American wheel increases the house edge to 5.26%.

The way the game is played is pretty much the same for both types of roulette. Players can bet on single numbers, groUPS of numbers, red or black, odd or even, or high or low. There are also bets called “inside” and “outside” bets.

Inside bets are bets made on specific numbers or combinations of numbers. Outside bets are made on large groUPS of numbers such as all red numbers, all black numbers, or all odd numbers.

The two types of roulette also differ in how the winning number is determined. In American roulette, the dealer spins a ball in one direction around the outside of the wheel while it spins in the opposite direction inside the wheel. The ball eventually slows down and falls into one of the 38 numbered slots on the wheel. In European roulette, there is no spinning ball.

Instead, a small metal ball is dropped onto the spinning wheel from a height of about six inches. It bounces around inside the wheel until it finally comes to rest in one of 37 numbered slots.

So what’s the difference between these two types of roulette? For starters, American roulette has a higher house edge due to that extra 00 slot. But there are some other differences as well.

For instance, in American roulette players can bet on specific combinations of numbers (such as 1-12 or 13-24), but this isn’t possible in European roulette. And while both games use a spinning wheel to determine the winning number, European roulette doesn’t have a ball – instead, a small metal ball is dropped onto the spinning wheel from a height of about six inches.

So which game should you play? If you’re looking for better odds of winning, stick with European roulette. But if you want to try something different (and you don’t mind slightly worse odds), American roulette might be worth checking out.
