What Casino Replaced the Desert Inn?

In 1998, the Desert Inn closed its doors for the last time. The iconic Las Vegas property, which first opened in 1950, was imploded to make way for The Wynn Las Vegas, which opened in 2005.

The Desert Inn was originally built by Wilbur Clark and was one of the first luxury hotels on the Las Vegas Strip. Clark also built the nearby El Rancho Vegas and Frontier Hotel, which were both popular with Hollywood celebrities and high rollers.

The Desert Inn was also home to some of the most famous performers in Las Vegas history, including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Wayne Newton.

PRO TIP:The Stardust Resort & Casino was built in 1958, replacing the Desert Inn which had been closed in 2000. The Stardust featured a similar level of luxury as the Desert Inn, but with more modern amenities and a larger casino floor. It was eventually demolished in 2007 to make way for the Las Vegas Strip’s newest hotel and casino, Wynn Las Vegas.

Liberace even had his own showroom at the Desert Inn.

In its later years, the Desert Inn struggled to compete with newer hotels on the Strip. The hotel was sold several times and went through a number of renovations.

In 1998, Steve Wynn bought the property with plans to build a new luxury hotel.

The Wynn Las Vegas is one of the most successful hotels on the Strip. The property features a casino, two UPScale hotels, numerous restaurants, bars, and nightclubs.

The Wynn also has its own golf course and spa.
