What Do Flap Slots Do?

Flap slots are a common feature on many aircraft. They are usually located on the trailing edge of the wing near the wingtip.

Flap slots help to improve the aerodynamic performance of an aircraft by reducing drag and increasing lift.

Flap slots work by redirecting the airflow over the wing. When the flaps are in the up position, the airflow is directed around the wingtip. This creates a low-pressure area on top of the wing, which increases lift.

When the flaps are lowered, the airflow is directed through the flap slot. This increases drag but also creates a high-pressure area on top of the wing, which further increases lift.

Flap slots are most effective when used in conjunction with other aerodynamic devices such as leading edge slats and trailing edge flaps. They can be used on both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft.
