What Does Hi Low Mean in Poker?

In poker, the term “hi-low” refers to a type of game in which the pot is split between the highest and Lowest hands. The high hand is the one with the highest value cards, and the low hand is the one with the Lowest value cards.

In Omaha hi-low, each player is dealt four cards face down. Then, five community cards are dealt face up in the middle of the table. These are shared by all players.

PRO TIP:When playing poker, ‘Hi-Low’ is a game variation where the pot is split between the highest and lowest hands. The highest hand must meet a minimum standard to qualify for the win, while the lowest hand must be at or below a maximum standard. It’s important to note that Ace can be used as both high and low in this game variant.

Players then use their four hole cards and three community cards to make their best five-card hand. The best high hand and the best low hand split the pot.

If there is no low hand, then the entire pot goes to the player with the best high hand. In order for there to be a low hand, all players must have a card of 8 or lower in their hand.

Straights and flushes do not count against a low hand. The ace can be used as a high card or a low card in Omaha hi-low.
