As this air reaches the mid-latitudes, it descends and flows back towards the equator. This circulation pattern is responsible for global weather patterns.

The Coriolis force is also responsible for the formation of hurricanes and typhoons in the northern and southern hemispheres. As air flows towards low pressure areas near the equator, it is deflected by the Coriolis force and rotates around these low pressure areas in a counter-clockwise direction in the northern hemisphere and a clockwise direction in the southern hemisphere.

This rotating wind eventually forms into a hurricane or typhoon.
