What Inspired Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino?

It’s been four years since Arctic Monkeys released their last album, 2013’s AM, and in that time, the band’s frontman Alex Turner has been up to a lot. He’s been busy recording with his other group, The Last Shadow Puppets; he’s been writing movie scores; and he’s even been working on a solo album.

But now, Turner and the rest of Arctic Monkeys are back with a new album, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, and it sounds like nothing they’ve ever done before.

So what inspired Turner and the band to make such a radical change in sound? It turns out that the answer is somewhat complex. In a new interview with NME, Turner explains that the inspiration for the album came from a variety of sources, including David Bowie, Stanley Kubrick, and the work of novelist J.

G. Ballard.

Bowie was a particularly important influence on Turner while he was making Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. “I was thinking a lot about Bowie when I was making this record,” Turner says. “The whole time I was making it I had Low playing in my head.

” Low is Bowie’s 1977 album, which is widely considered to be one of his best records. Like Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, Low is an experimental record that takes risks and challenges expectations.

Kubrick’s work also served as an inspiration for Turner while he was making the new album. “The first time I watched 2001: A Space Odyssey I was maybe 12 years old,” Turner says. “I remember thinking it was the coolest thing I’d ever seen.

” Turner is referring to Kubrick’s 1968 film, which is considered by many to be one of the greatest films ever made. 2001: A Space Odyssey is an enigmatic film that leaves a lot up to interpretation, and Turner says that he tried to capture some of that same feeling on Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino.

Finally, Ballard was another key influence on Turner while he was making the new album. Ballard is best known for his novel Crash, which tells the story of people who get sexually aroused by car accidents. It’s a dark and disturbing book, but it’s also strangely compelling. And according to Turner, it had a big impact on him while he was making Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino.

“I read [Ballard’s] book The Drowned World when I was working on this record,” Turner says. “It blew my mind.”.

So there you have it: Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino was inspired by David Bowie, Stanley Kubrick, and J.G.

Ballard. It’s an unlikely combination of influences, but then again, that’s what makes Arctic Monkeys so interesting – they’re always willing to take risks and push boundaries.
