What Is a Winning Hand in Poker?

In poker, there are generally two types of winning hands: those that are made up of the best five cards, and those that use special combinations of cards. The best five-card hand is typically called a “straight flush.

” This is a hand in which all five cards are of the same suit and in sequence. For example, if you have a hand with the cards 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 all of clubs, this is a straight flush.

The next best hand is four of a kind. This is a hand in which you have four cards of the same rank.

For example, if you had four 9s, this would be four of a kind.

PRO TIP:In poker, a winning hand is one which has the highest combination of cards that can be made from the 5 card hand dealt. Examples include a Royal Flush (10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace all of the same suit), Straight Flush (5 cards in sequence all of the same suit) and Four of a Kind (4 cards with the same rank).

A full house is a hand that contains three of one rank and two of another. So, if you had three 10s and two 4s, this would be a full house.

A flush is a hand where all five cards are of the same suit but not necessarily in sequence. So, if you had the cards Ace, 10, 9, 5, 3 all of clubs, this would be a flush.

A straight is a hand consisting of five cards in sequence but not necessarily all of the same suit. So, if you had the cards Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10 all of different suits, this would be considered a straight.

Three of a kind is simply a hand that contains three cards of the same rank. Two pair is a hand that contains two pairs of cards with matching ranks. For example, if you had two 9s and two 4s, this would be considered two pair.

One pair is simply a hand with two cards that have matching ranks. High card means that none of the above combinations are present and the highest ranking card in your hand will determine your ranking for that particular hand.
