# What Is the Count in Blackjack?

In blackjack, the count is the running total of the values of the cards dealt. The count is used to give the player an edge over the casino.

The higher the count, the more likely the player is to be dealt a natural blackjack (an Ace and a 10-valued card).

The count starts at 0 and goes up or down depending on the value of the cards dealt. Cards 2 through 6 are worth +1, 7s through 9 are worth 0, and 10s, Jacks, Queens and Kings (J,Q,K) are each worth -1.

Aces can be counted as either +1 or -1, depending on what is advantageous for the player at any given time.

PRO TIP:In Blackjack, the count is a term used to refer to the total value of all cards currently in play. Each card is assigned a numerical value from -1, 0, 1, and 2. The count is kept by adding or subtracting the values of each card that is dealt; if the count is positive it indicates that there are more high cards (10s and Aces) remaining in the deck than low cards (2s through 6s). Knowing the current count can help players make smart decisions about when to hit or stand.

The count is kept mentally by the player and is not supposed to be shared with other players at the table. In some casinos, dealers are not allowed to take action (hit or stand) when the player’s count exceeds a certain number.

A player who knows how to keep a count can use it to his advantage. He can raise his bet when the count is high (in favor of the player) and lower his bet when the count is low (in favor of the casino).

By doing so, he can put the odds in his favor and win more money in the long run.
