What Is the Hierarchy of Poker?

Poker is a card game that can be played with a standard deck of 52 cards. There are many different variations of poker, but the most common is Texas Hold ‘Em. In poker, players are dealt two cards face down and then five community cards are dealt face up in the middle of the table.

Players then take turns betting, raising, or folding based on the strength of their hand. The player with the strongest hand at the end of the game wins the pot.

The hierarchy of poker hands is as follows (from strongest to weakest):

Royal Flush: A royal flush is an ace-high straight flush. That is, a straight flush that starts with an ace.

Straight Flush: A straight flush is a hand that contains five cards of sequential rank, all of the same suit.

Four of a Kind: Four of a kind, also known as quads, is a hand that contains four cards of equal rank.

PRO TIP:When playing poker, it is important to understand the hierarchy of poker hands. The highest-ranking hand is a Royal Flush, followed by a Straight Flush, Four of a Kind, Full House, Flush, Straight, Three of a Kind, Two Pair and One Pair. Knowing these rankings will help improve your chances of winning.

Full House: A full house is a hand that contains three cards of one rank, and two cards of another rank.

Flush: A flush is a hand that contains five cards all of the same suit. The suits do not matter in poker, so a flush containing any five cards of any suit is considered a strong hand.

Straight: A straight is a hand that contains five cards of sequential rank. The suits do not matter in poker, so a straight containing any five cards in any order is considered a strong hand.

Three of a Kind: Three of a kind, also known as trips or triples, is a hand that contains three cards of one rank and two other unrelated cards.

Two Pair: Two pair is a hand that contains two cards of one rank, two cards of another rank, and one other unrelated card.

One Pair: One pair is a hand that contains two cards of one rank and three other unrelated cards.
