The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation is a federally recognized Native American tribe with a reservation located in Mayetta, Jackson County, Kansas, United States. The Prairie Band Potawatomi have a long and rich history dating back thousands of years.

The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation is the modern-day successor to a long line of ancestors who occupied a large portion of North America. The first Potawatomi people are thought to have migrated from the Great Lakes region to present-day Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois.
As Euro-American settlement increased in the Great Lakes region during the 1600s and 1700s, the Potawatomi were pushed westward. By the early 1800s, the majority of the Potawatomi people had settled in what is now northeastern Kansas.
In 1846, the Prairie Band of Potawatomi signed a treaty with the United States government that ceded their lands in Michigan and Illinois and granted them a reservation in northeastern Kansas. The new reservation was located on the Kansas River, about 30 miles north of Topeka.
The Prairie Band Potawatomi reservation is still located in Jackson County, Kansas, and today encompasses about 14,000 acres.
The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation is a sovereign nation with its own government, lAWS, police force and courts. The tribal council is the governing body of the tribe, and consists of eight elected officials who serve four-year terms.
The current tribal chairman is Angelo Baca.
The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation has a diversified economy that includes agriculture, manufacturing, tourism and gaming. The tribe owns and operates several businesses, including Fire Keeper’s Casino Hotel, which is located on the reservation near Mayetta, Kansas.
