What Was the Second Casino in Atlantic City?

The Second Casino in Atlantic City was the Trump Taj Mahal. It was opened in 1990 by then-owner Donald Trump. The casino was built at a cost of over $1 billion, making it the most expensive casino ever built at the time.

The Trump Taj Mahal was originally intended to be even more lavish than Trump’s first casino in Atlantic City, the Trump Plaza. However, due to the recession of the early 1990s, the project was scaled back and construction delays meant that the casino opened well behind schedule.

Despite its late start, the Trump Taj Mahal quickly became one of the most successful casinos in Atlantic City. It was helped by its location on the Boardwalk, which made it one of the most visible casinos in town.

The casino also had a large number of hotel rooms, which made it popular with tourists and conventions. However, the Trump Taj Mahal began to struggle financially in the early 2000s, as competition from newer casinos increased and Atlantic City’s overall fortunes declined.

In 2014, Donald Trump announced that he was selling the Trump Taj Mahal to billionaire investor Carl Icahn. Icahn then closed the casino in 2016 after failing to reach an agreement with striking workers.

The Trump Taj Mahal is currently being demolished and is scheduled to be replaced by a new hotel and casino complex.
