The Miccosukee tribe is a federally recognized Indian tribe that is headquartered in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The tribe has about 600 members. The tribe’s reservation is about 30 miles (48 km) west of Miami.
The tribe is governed by a nine-person Tribal Council. The current chief of the tribe is Billy Cypress.

Supreme Court ruled that the Miccosukee Tribe was not entitled to sovereign immunity from lAWSuits filed by non-Indians. This ruling opened the door for lAWSuits seeking to stop the tribe from operating its casinos and other businesses on its reservation.
In 1983, the U.
Congress passed the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA), which established a framework for regulating tribal gaming operations nationwide. Under IGRA, tribes are required to enter into compacts with state governments in order to operate casinos and other Class III gaming facilities on their reservations.
The Miccosukee Tribe has entered into compacts with both the state of Florida and Miami-Dade County allowing it to operate its gaming facilities on its reservation lands. These compacts restrict the types and number of gaming machines that can be operated at the casino as well as impose other restrictions on tribal gaming operations.
The Miccosukee Tribe has been successful in operating its casinos and other businesses on its reservation lands despite these restrictions. The Tribe’s economic success has allowed it to provide many benefits to its members, including housing, education, and healthcare assistance. The Tribe also uses its revenues to fund environmental conservation programs and cultural preservation initiatives within its reservation boundaries.
