What Is the Use of Stator Slots?

The stator slots are the openings in the stator of an electric motor or generator through which the armature windings are inserted. The number, shape, and depth of the slots have a significant effect on the performance of the machine.

The primary function of the stator slots is to support and locate the armature winding. The winding is inserted into the slots and held in place by wedges, clips, or other means.

The shape of the stator slots has a major effect on the magnetic field distribution in the air gap and consequently on the performance of the machine. The most common slot shapes are round, oval, rectangular, and trapezoidal.

The depth of the stator slots also affects performance. Shallow slots provide good support for the armature winding and minimize winding resistance but can cause magnetic field distortion.

Deep slots improve field geometry but can increase winding resistance and make it difficult to insert and remove the armature winding.
