Who Gets Paid in Blackjack?

In blackjack, the player is paid out if their hand totals 21 or less and the dealer “busts” (i.e. their hand totals more than 21).

If the player and dealer have the same hand total, it is a “push” and neither player nor dealer wins or loses.

PRO TIP:In Blackjack, the player is paid by the casino as long as their hand beats the dealer’s without going over 21. If the dealer has a better hand or goes over 21, all players who have not gone over 21 are paid.

The player is also paid out if they have a blackjack, which is a hand consisting of an Ace and any 10-valued card. A blackjack pays out at 3:2 odds, meaning that for every $2 wagered, the player will win $3.

If the dealer has a blackjack, all players lose their original bet except for those who also have a blackjack, in which case it is a push.

Players can also choose to “surrender” their hand, in which case they lose half of their original bet. Surrender is not available on all blackjack tables and is typically only offered as an option after the player has seen their initial two cards.
